Suitable for: For all museums staff and volunteers or those involved with the care of collections which include costume and textiles.
Participants will be introduced to making mounts for flat display through practical hands on training. Basic sewing skills are essential. Different materials will be shown, demonstrated and problem shapes will be introduced. Participants will work individually to produce an example of best practice methods of mounting flat textiles provided from the collections at MEAL. The session will end with a ‘sewing surgery’ which will address any particular problems participants commonly have at their own sites.
PLEASE NOTE: Participants to bring their own preferred sewing needles, thread and scissors, and thimbles if required. If they own a curved sewing needle to bring that with them also. All tools should be clearly named before arrival so that they are not misplaced throughout the day. All other materials will be provided including needles, thread, and scissors. Handouts will be available for participants to take away.
By the end of the session, participants will be given confidence building techniques and practical solutions including:
- Assessing an object and its suitability for display
- How to choose the style of mount to support the object
- How to mount a flat textile
Refreshments will be provided. Please make your own arrangements for lunch.
