Trainer: David Burgess – Director, Apollo Fundraising

In May 2018, the law on Data Protection will change, affecting the way you collect and process personal information. These changes will almost certainly affect your organisation – not least in the way you use personal data for direct marketing and fundraising.

Successful fundraisers know the importance of data in raising money, providing the knowledge they need to develop an appropriate fundraising strategy. At every stage of the supporter journey, the data you hold on each supporter and prospect should shape the next interaction. It is vital that fundraisers and trustees understand what they can and can’t do – both for protecting the organisation but, more importantly, for your supporters.

This session will look at Data Savvy Fundraising from both sides. We will start by looking at the importance of data in fundraising and how you can use data to build a successful fundraising strategy. The session will then provide an introduction to the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) with a particular focus on the implications for direct marketing and fundraising.

Miranda Rowlands, SHARED Enterprise Project Officer says “This training is essential for fundraisers, museum managers and trustees, who are all responsible for ensuring compliance with the new data protection legislation. Anyone who handles personal data in museums, especially if the data is used for fundraising or marketing purposes, needs to understand how their practices are affected by the changes in the law.”

The workshop will cover:

  • An introduction to Data Protection legislation
  • How do you use Data?
  • What are the legal conditions for processing data?
  • How do you write a Privacy Policy?

By the end of this workshop, participants will have greater confidence and understanding in:

  • The legal landscape governing how you use personal data for fundraising
  • The different conditions you can use for collecting and processing data
  • The elements you need to address when writing your Privacy Policy

Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Please tell us if you have any access or dietary needs.

This is a repeat of the session held on 18 October at Ipswich Art School.
