This practical course, led by Jenny Rose (Senior Conservator with the Hamilton Kerr Institute), is designed for museum staff or volunteers with responsibility for the care of paintings in the collection, where there is not a paintings conservator on site.
It will focus on how to care for paintings in your collection, including:
- The structure of paintings
- Environmental requirements
- Condition checking and signs of deterioration
- Housekeeping: basic care and when/how to contact a conservator
- Handling and packing
There will be practical training in handling, packing and basic housekeeping.
By the end of the course participants will:
- understand the basic environmental requirements of paintings in their care
- understand the differences between conservation and restoration and will have explored some basic ethical issues involved
- be able to identify problems with the painting and whether a conservator is required
- Feel more confident about handling the paintings
- Be able to check whether their paintings have been hung properly
The Hamilton Kerr Institute is a department of the Fitzwilliam Museum. The Institute undertakes the conservation of easel paintings for public and publicly shown collections as well as the Museum.
